Service Outreach

In the 25th Chapter of Matthew's Gospel, Jesus reminds us that "whatever you do for one of the least of my people, you do for me."  It is our intent that the rich resource of service outreach be integrally developed in the accumulative education attained by the students and the teaching community at Cathedral High School.  We are invited to participate in the teachings of our Roman Catholic faith and to generously and wisely become good stewards who donate our time, talent and treasure to improve the world in which we live.  At Cathedral, we embrace the integration of service into our holistic and spiritual development, as provided in the following service acronym:

   I       In Christ's Name
   R     Realizing our many blessings
   I       Imitating our Savior
   S     Serving our diverse community
H     Humbly learning from those we serve.

Each student will be asked to develop a service portfolio during their four years at Cathedral which will include their service hours, service reflections and service learning projects.  Upon graduation, our students will have service experiences totaling one hundred service hours of humanitarian effort for the extended community in which we reside.  In order to accomplish this total of one hundred hours, our students are asked to accumulate twenty five service hours each year.  Specific class service projects offered for the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior class provide service opportunities into disadvantaged sectors of our surrounding community and world. It is intended that the educational and spiritual journey of service enrich our Cathedral students with a gospel attitude of life long service to others. These requirements are applicable to all students in 2009-10.  Whereas service hours documentation should be completed as service hours are performed, the final due date for service hours for underclassmen is April 23, 2010.  Seniors are being asked to complete their service hours by November 1,2009 (10 hrs) and leadership hours by March 1, 2010 (15 hrs).

Listings and description of service opportunity resources can be found:

  1. on the Cathedral Website under Campus Ministry, Service Outreach, Service
Agencies, Current Service Opportunities and Class Service Projects, and
  2. in the Cathedral Blue Book.

Students are encouraged to work with a non-profit agency over the summer in a disadvantaged area of need in order to maximize their individual growth.  Personal introduction and orientation to service opportunities with charitable and not-profit agencies will also be provided at the Service Festival on Tuesday, October 20,  2009.

Any serice hour questions may be directed to Cheri Halstead, at 968-7317 or chalstead@cathedral-irish.org.  At Cathedral, we give a sincere thank you to our students for their commited and diligent service to our extended community.
