Mrs. Liz Browning's Composition class read the novel, The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. This book is about a nuclear holocaust that finds a father and son scavenging for food in order to survive. The students discussed the issues of hunger and nutrition in our world and then decided to look at the issues from a local perspective. They worked at Gleaners Food Bank sorting canned and boxed food. They related their reflective compositions and class discussions to the novel and their experience at Gleaners. This student-produced video is a demonstration of what they learned through this service learning experience.
The Road
In response to the 2009 national Learn & Serve Challenge, students on the Cathedral Student Service Learning Council (SSLC) decided to produce a video of the Service Learning Program's first year (2008-09) at Cathedral. Students interviewed other students, faculty, and administrators involved in the program and presented several examples of service learning as a teaching and learning method. Students on the SSLC created, directed, and produced the video.
