Cathedral's Holy Cross Connection
Reflection of the Day:
"We shall always place education side by side with instruction; the mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart. While we prepare useful citizens for society, we shall likewise do our utmost to prepare citizens for heaven."
(Blessed Basil Moreau)
Cathedral High School brings Catholic values to life every day in how we profoundly shape the way our students will think, serve and lead. One important part of those values is our reaffiliation with the Brothers of Holy Cross, which was formalized on Sept. 13, 2011.
Since 1918, Cathedral has lived Holy Cross values. That means we focus on the development of the whole student--affording them opportunities for spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth. Today, that tradition continues as we are proud to be one of 17 schools in the country that have a formal affiliation with the Brothers of Holy Cross.
The Brothers were founded in 1837, as part of a unification of the Brothers of St. Joseph, organized in 1820 by Father Jacques Dujarié. In 1835, Father Basil Moreau took over the Brothers of St. Joseph, and in 1837, unified the Brothers of St. Joseph with a group named the Auxiliary Priests forming the Association of Holy Cross.
From that Association develop three bodies within the same order: Holy Cross Priests; the Brothers of Holy Cross and the Holy Cross sisters, known as the Marianites of Holy Cross.
- Father Moreau spent nearly the next 30 years as the superior general of Holy Cross, retiring in 1866. He died in 1873 at the age of 73.
- In 1955, the cause for sainthood for Father Moreau officially opened, and later that year is declared a "Servant of God," the first of four stages toward canonization.
- In 1962, Pope John XXIII convenes the Second Vatican Council, postponing movement toward Moreau's canonization.
- Moreau's cause is revisited, and in 2003, he is declared Venerable.
- In 2007, Moreau was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI.

He received assistance from a number of students:
