Volunteer areas

Cleaning
Whether it’s assistance with cleaning kennels and cat cages or helping out with the endless amounts of laundry we process every day, your assistance is so appreciated. It makes all the difference to the staff, and of course, the animals.

Animal Socialization
Animal Socialization can include walking, playing, grooming, or simply “cuddling” and spending time with an animal that is scared and lonely. It is our volunteers who provide the animals with much needed reassurance, love and comfort. Once you have attended an orientation and one training session, you are welcome to come in to help at any time the shelter is open to the public and you can volunteer as many or as few hours as fit your schedule.

Maintenance & Up-Keep
We are responsible for our own yard maintenance and general up keep around the shelter. If you can help with pulling weeds or are a ‘handy man’, we can always use the help!

Special Events Volunteers
Special Events volunteers would be mostly active in the summer and can choose to donate as little or as much time as they choose. Special events volunteers would be critical in working at Pet Fest and other fundraising events held during throughout the year. Volunteers participating in this program require no previous experience, just enthusiasm! Please note there may be some age restrictions depending on the event.

Service Projects

If you are looking to do a few hours of community service work as part of a club, class, or church activity, the Humane Society for Hamilton County has an opportunity for you! For more information on how to conduct your own fundraiser, please contact the volunteer coordinator at hshcvolunteers@hamiltonhumane.com.

Kids Against Hunger of Central Indiana

Noblesville Red Cross
15325 Herriman Blvd
Noblesville, IN

Purpose

Kids Against Hunger (KAH), a national program, has recently opened a chapter in our area.  For just twenty-three cents a meal, KAH provides a complete nutritional diet that is proven to bring children suffering from severe malnutrition back to a healthy body.  About 95% of every donation goes to feeding these children around the world.

Service

KAH assembles food packets in two hour shifts at the Red Cross Headquarters in Noblesville.   During this food assembly, you would be measuring food and assembling packages for delivery to third world country.  Adults and children are welcome.  A donation of $25 per volunteer would be welcome but is not mandatory.  In addition to coming to help assemble food packets, you could also raise money by asking twenty five people to sponsor you for a dollar.  Then you will have raised the $25 sponsorship funds.  Both efforts, assembling food packets and raising sponsors, would count for service hours.  You can choose to assemble, or raise money and assemble.

Service hours for the 09-10 school year may be earned and we have fun too!

Details

Usually we meet at the Herriman address in Noblesville for the 1-3 assembly shift.  Contact Mrs. Halstead if you need a ride from the Cathedral campus. Email chalstead@cathedral-irish.org

Schedule:  Once a month, on the third Saturday of each month.
If you cannot work with us duirng the 1-3 shift, you can work at the 10-12 shift.

Informative Data

This organization serves Individuals of ages 62 years old and up.  It is a retirement community with residents in independent living, assisted living and health care.

Our services assist residents in achieving their highest level of independence, promoting programs for mental, physical, social and spiritual development.

There are volunteer opportunities after school hours and on weekends.  Volunteers can help with a variety of activities, do one-on-one visitation, explore their artistic side and decorate shadow boxes and bulletin boards.  If comfortable, volunteers can run group activities.

During the Summer, mornings and afternoons or weekends are available for volunteers to enjoy working with the elderly.  There are outings that become available when volunteers have more time.  Also, during the summer, taking residents outside and visiting is always a fun time.

Volunteers are expected to have an interview/tour.  Once it is decided they want to volunteer at Marquette Manor, they go through an orientation and then a training specific to the job.
Interviews and tours are offered at varying times, accommodating the needs of the volunteer.

Touching Spotlight Story

“One of our residents was able to visit the State Fair grounds with some volunteers.  Wheel chair bound, she was rolled to the horse barn area.  A trainer brought out a horse for her to fondle and nuzzle and she re-lived the wonderful passion that she has for horses and had nurtured during her entire life.” This is one way that you can help on Special Outing Days.   “Another group of high school students came to Marquette Manor and provided a Spa Day for some of the women residents.  They styled their hair and did their nails. The residents felt especially loved and appreciated.” Tricia Bennett commented that all of their residents greatly appreciate the time that student volunteers give.

Mission

Noble of Indiana's mission is to create opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities, such as autism and Down syndrome, to live meaningful lives.  We do this in a variety of ways.  We provide therapy to children ages 0-3 through our First Steps program.  We serve youth ages 7-17 through our summer camps.  We also serve adults by helping them learn daily living skills in 4 different day programs around the Indianapolis area.  We have helped over 500 individuals with developmental disabilities obtain jobs in the community.  And at the same time, we have helped their families too.

Volunteer Opportunities

Noble of Indiana has many volunteer opportunities to offer for Cathedral students.  In our day programs, we provide recreational therapy, music therapy, and art therapy.  We also have many clubs, such as a fan club, where volunteers can come and help with various activities throughout the day.  We also ask for volunteers to come in and help instructors teach cooking skills, money skills, writing skills, etc.  These volunteer opportunities are available Monday - Friday from about 9:00am - 3:00pm.

During the summer we have a summer camp for children ages 7-17.  We always look for volunteers to help instructors with various activities at the summer camps.  The locations for these camps will be:

Providence  Cristo Rey High School

Providence Cristo Rey High School
75 N. Belleview Place
Indianapolis, IN  46222

 website

Mission

The mission of the school is to serve economically-disadvantaged (qualify for free or reduced lunch) men and women who
would like to attend a private high school but who can’t afford it, even with scholarships.  We make it affordable by contracting with professional businesses (e.g., law firms, accounting firms, architects, Lilly, etc.) to hire a team of four students who job-share a full-time, entry-level position.  They rotate who goes to work each day, and we work their class schedule around their work schedule.  To make up the time (since they will have a college-prep curriculum here), we go longer school days and a longer school year. Often, the students come to us  below grade level.  Our task is to catch them up and get them on their way to college!

We have opened on July 16, 2007 with about 135 students (110 frosh and 25 sophs) and will add about 100 students each year.

Volunteer Opportunities

Seniors have started tutoring after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays, at Providence Cristo Rey.  Arrive at 75 N. Belleview Place and tutor from 4:05 to 5:00 PM.  Contact Seniors Maria Dickman or Sam Becker about your interests to help with the tutoring.

When this school opens, it will be due to a giving Indianapolis community who want to make a difference.  Feel free to come to visit.  It’s crazy here, as we try to find students and raise money (Like Cathedral , we get no direct Archdiocesan financial support and as of yet, have no alumni base, either, so it’s a huge challenge).  We always love to have helpful visitors!

Directions

Providence Cristo Rey Highschool is at the corner of Belleview (2500 West) and Ohio, about two minutes west of the zoo (It’s a zoo here as well!!!)   The easiest way from Cathedral is to go Fall Creek to Capitol, Capitol to Washington, right on
Washington to Belleview, and right on Belleview one block.

Touching Spotlight Story
April has been at St. Mary’s Child Center for about three months.  April is five years old and she lives with her mother and siblings because her father is incarcerated.  April has been receiving play therapy since the first week she attended St. Mary’s Child Center.  At first, she did not speak, did not interact with the other children, did not smile often and did not participate in play with the other children.  A few weeks ago, April began to show some interest in the individuals around her.  She started by holding on to the play therapist’s hand and suggesting that they pretend to knock on a door.  From this moment, April has opened up and is now participating, smiling and interacting with both children and adults.  She still needs services but she is on the right path with all of the help she is receiving from St. Mary’s Child Center.

Touching Spotlight Story

At St. Lawrence, I have the honor of making Hispanic house calls to assist families.  I accompany a member of St. Vincent dePaul who has a list of individuals who have phoned into the Hispanic help line for assistance.  We often visit a family who has newly moved to Indianapolis or has changed addresses and they do not have furniture for the living room nor beds in the bedrooms.  Most of the women do not work out of the home and do not have transportation to leave their apartment during the day.  They are very clean and appreciative of the opportunity to gain some furniture, clothing for the children, winter coats and work clothes for working in cold weather.  Sometines there is a new baby coming and they need a crib or baby blankets.  It is eye opening to realize how simply these individuals live.  They are very warm and courteous during the visit.  Sometimes we talk about ways they can learn English at free classes in Lawrence Township.   We also talk about Spanish masses close by and which churches can further assist them.  Lastly,  we pray the Padre Nuestro(Our Father) in Spanish.    If food is a concern, we do refer them to the Pratt-Quigley Food Center.  We leave with them their vouchers for the needed home furnishings, directions for the Distribution Warehouse, and recommendations that they must arrive early (as early as 6:30 A.M.) to wait in line for the opportunity to get their needed furnishings from 8-1 on Saturdays.  They do not get to choose their preferred sofa; one is simply administered to them.  There are a few items of clothing and household needs which are client choice.  Most of the items are simply allocated to them.  As I leave their home, I am satisfied that their needs are being further met at the Distribution Center and I imagine a friendly, supportive person assisting them.    If they need food from the food pantry, I can envision a kind faced individual checking them in and assisting them with their shopping totals.  I say a quiet prayer for their dignity, improved family opportunity and well being as we leave.

My name is Dan Palo, I am with The Virtual Scavengers Project.  We collect computers and electronics and teach homeless, low income , and volunteers how to refurbish and demanufacture old computers.  We then send those computers to churches, schools, and not for profits locally and around the world we recycle what we don’t reuse.  Our mission is to protect the environment by keeping electronic waste out of landfills and put the technology into the hands of those who need it. In doing this we provide training and workforce development opportunities to build a cleaner, smarter growing community. We are a not for profit 501(c)3.  We have sent computers all over the world helping local and global communities.  We remove all data to a DOD standard!  In doing this we end up with lots of E-Scrap. The volunteers will help move and sort computers and electronic scrap moderate lifting up to 50lbs.  We will provide lunch.

Mission

Wheeler Mission serves the homeless, the poor and the underprivileged men, women and families, as well as single women in our community.  Wheeler Mission is a Christian, faith based organization.  Their services range from housing, meals, counseling, classes, bible study and support for all sectors of needs.  They have facilities for men, women and children, and single women.  They also have a summer camp called Camp Hunt in the Bloomington/Martinsville area.   They also have an outreach ministry for the Hispanic community called Mano de Amistad.

Volunteering

Serveing Meals

Meals are served at three locations:  The Men’s Mission, The Care Center (serving women and children) and  Lighthouse Mission. Volunteers are vital to this ministry. The simplest way to volunteer at Wheeler is to serve a meal at one of our shelters.  The tasks are all simple and have to do with serving food on a serving line, or some other simple task in the kitchen or dining room during the timeframe of a meal.  There is no paperwork involved except signing in when you actually arrive to serve the meal.  It is very rewarding and represents their greatest need in terms of the number of volunteers they use in a year’s time.

The options for serving meals are:

  • Men’s Mission, 245 N Delaware St, 46204 - Lunch (11:15a.m.-1:15p.m.); or Dinner (4:15-6:15p.m.). They schedule up to 15 volunteers for each meal.  Week days represent the greater need, however, if a larger group (over 5-6) wants to volunteer, the dates available may be limited.  They do have two shifts on Saturdays available to help prepare for the meals.  Those timeframes are: 8:00-10:30 a.m.; and 2:00-4:15 p.m.  Plus, they have limited opportunities for individuals or groups to serve meals on weekends, since this is the most popular time that people request to volunteer.
  • Women and Children’s Shelter called The Care Center, 23 N Rural St , 46201 – Lunch (11:15-12:30) and Dinner (4:30-6:00pm). They schedule up to 4-7 volunteers daily to serve each meal.  Week days represent the greater need. They have a limited number of spaces on weekends mostly for 2-4 people.  Males are scheduled if they serve with at least one female.
  •  Lighthouse Mission, 520 E Market Street (this shelter is now affiliated with Wheeler as of a merger that took place in September 2006).  Meals are served at Lighthouse Mission;  Mon-Sat Lunch is served 11:30-1 and dinner is served 4-6 PM.  Breakfasts may be served as well 6-7:30 AM Monday-Sat.  On Sunday, a lunch is service from 1:30 - 3 PM.
Volunteers do need to be on the schedule before showing up.  If serving a meal is something you are interested in, please contact Cathy Rohrer and let her know how many will be serving at one time, what time of day and the days of the week you are available.  She will be happy to give you some dates that Wheeler needs help.

all of the above schedule service opportunities are open to them. Is there training which our students need to participate at your agency? Specific training will be discussed relative to the service you are seeking to provide.

Touching Spotlight Story

According to Care Center head, Paulette Moore,  “Not everyone who comes to the Mission is‘average,’ with problems that can be solved in a few days or a few weeks.”  To help those who need so much more than food and shelter, the Care Center features a Special Needs program.  Statistics from the National
Resources Training Center on Homelessness and Mental Illness confirm the patterns we see here in Indianapolis:
While only 4% of the U.S. population has a serious mental illness, 20-25% of homeless people fall into this category.  These men and women are typically long-term citizens of the communities in which they are homeless.  They have often lost contact with family members or do not have family members who are equipped to care for them.   Wheeler’s Care Center works with other agencies to make arrangements for individuals like Idessa, an individual introduced to us in their newsletter. Since the program began, 10 women have moved from the Center into permanent, supervised housing.
